Mount Challicum Fleece Tops Competition

An Ultrafine Merino fleece from Mount Challicum Merino Stud won the Grand Champion Fleece title at the Australian Fleece Competition held in Bendigo as part of the Australian Sheep & Wool Show during July 2014. The 16.5 micron fleece was one of almost 500 entries this year and scored 94.85 out of a possible 100 points.

The Australian Fleece Competition, now in its 14th year, allocates the majority of points using objective test results to calculate the potential processing performance of each fleece.

Over 30 entries were received in a new Performance class for wool shorn from commercial flocks with 6 – 8 months growth, rather than the traditional 12 months growth. This class was introduced because some commercial wool growers have recognised that, with 12 months growth, their flocks will produce wool that may be considered too long by some wool processors.
